Adding and extracting VAT
Adding VAT multiplies the base by the rate. Extracting it divides the total by one plus the rate; subtracting 16% of the total does not give the correct base.
Choose the applicable rate
16% is the general rate. 8% requires eligibility for a border incentive, rather than simply being in a border state. Zero-rated and exempt transactions have different tax treatments even though VAT here is numerically zero.
